Outlined in this article is a detailed algorithm designed by bioethics consultants and legal advisors in New York meant to aid physicians in caring for unrepresented patients, providing a framework to work off of. The algorithm consists of nine steps including but not limited to: convening a multidisciplinary group, exploring past wishes of the patient, and preparing an ethics consultation. The New York algorithm is one of the first outlining such a process in this level of detail.
